Adding a Link to the Fly-in Directory
From Matronics
< Fly-ins
The fly-in directory is one of the simplest pages to edit on the RV Wiki. Each fly-in entry is a single line of text containing these three elements:
- the name of the fly-in (and the location, if different from the name)
- the date of the fly-in
- the name of the organization running the fly-in
These three elements are separated by a double dash (--).
To add a new fly-in, begin by clicking the "edit" tab at the top of the fly-in directory page. That will take you to a page called "Editing Fly-ins," which contains the wiki code that creates the page. Wiki code is simply the text that appears on the page plus special characters that tell the web server how to display the page.
You can ignore most of the wiki code.
As you scroll down the in the editing window you'll see that each month is listed like this:
'''January'''
Scroll down until you find the month of your fly-in. If there are already fly-ins listed under that month, you'll want to fit yours in the correct chronological position, so check the dates shown for each of the fly-ins already listed there. Place a cursor at the start of the line that will follow your line, and hit return to create a new blank line.
You will enter a single, new line of text on this blank line that will look something like this:
*[http://www.yourURL.com/ Anywhere Fly-in] Anywhere, USA -- September 27 -- EAA
Here is what each element of this line of code means:
* | An asterisk the start of the line creates a bullet point. |
[ | The opening square bracket indicates the start of the link code. |
http://www.yourURL.com/ | This is the URL (address) of your fly-in web site. |
Anywhere Fly-in | The name of your fly-in. |
] | The closing square bracket indicates the end of the link code. |
Anywhere, USA | The location of your fly-in (if not obvious from the name). |
September 27 | The date of the fly-in. |
EAA | The fly-in organizer. |
Note that there are two main elements inside the square brackets: the URL (address) of your web site and the name of your fly-in. They must be separated by a blank space. This will display the name of your fly-in highlighted as a link.
The easiest way to obtain the URL (address) to your fly-in web site is to:
- open another browser window
- go to your web site
- select the text in the Location field at the top of the browser
- copy it
- return to the "Editing Fly-ins" window
- paste in the text
When you're finished entering your line of code, scroll down to the bottom of the edit page and click the "Show preview" button. That will display a replica of the Fly-in page showing your new entry. Check to see that it is correct. If it's not, there is an editing window at the bottom of that page that you can use to make any corrections.
Once you're satisfied that the page is correct, scroll to the bottom and click the "Save page" button. You're done!
If you think you really messed up the page, don't worry, it can easily be reverted to the previous version. Just click here to go to Tedd McHenry's web page and select the "Email this user" link on the left to send him an email.
