From Matronics
The Tailwind is a plans built craft. (There are no kits.) The frame is made of welded tubular aircraft steel and fitted with wooden wings. The first Tailwind was designed and built by Steve Whitman in 1953.
It takes approximately 2600 hours for the average builder to build the Tailwind. There are over 300 Tailwinds in the FAA registry.
Performance
The Tailwind is a very efficient airframe. For example, a 100 HP engine typically cruises at about 130 MPH. Engines from about 85 to 150 or 160 HP are typically used.
