Typical Rivet Gun and Sets

Rivet guns are the tools classically associated with the construction of metal aircraft. They 'hammer' (though, don't confuse them with tools called 'air hammers') the rivet causing it to deform and create a well-secured joint.

The rivet gun is used with rivet sets, which are affixed to the front of the gun and are used to actually stike the work surface. These are shaped for specific tasks (i.e. operating against the domed factory head of a universal rivet, the flat head of a flush rivet, the shank of a rivet when back riveting, etc.).

Sets are secured on the front of the gun with retainer springs. These make sure that if the gun is fired without the set being against the work material (something not recommended) that the set will not go flying across the room and damage either people or property. It is a critical safety measure that must not be neglected. Shown is a typical 3x rivet gun and a number of rivet sets which can be used with that gun.
